Kirkwood’s Griffes wins Tahoe Mountain Milers 5k snowshoe race

Gareth Griffes, 27, of Kirkwood, was the fastest snowshoer Sunday, Feb. 25, in the Fresh Tracks 5K Walk/Race held at Camp Richardson.

Griffes finished the distance in 26 minutes, 9 seconds to beat the 41-person field by over 3 minutes.

Truckee’s Denise Kowel, 53, was the fastest female and finished in fourth place overall in a time of 32:31.

Club president of the Tahoe Mountain Milers, the host of the event, EJ Maldonado, 41, of Carson City, finished in second place.

The oldest competitor was 76-year-old Reno resident Floyd Whiting, who finished 11th.
