Lake Tahoe Marathon seeks volunteers

Volunteers are needed to support the more than 3,000 athletes competing in the seventh annual Lake Tahoe Marathon on Oct. 13.

As in past years, volunteers are an important element in making this event, held during a traditionally slow time of year, a success.

Passing out water at the aid stations, preparing the Marathon’s finish-line celebration, distributing racing bibs, putting up road barriers and signs and keeping track of the lead racer’s times through cell phones are only a few of the ways volunteers can help with the Lake Tahoe Marathon. Medical professionals also are needed throughout the race, as well as bands willing to provide live music throughout the race course.

As a thank you from the Lake Tahoe Marathon, all volunteers will receive a free marathon T-shirt and the gratitude of the runners. Volunteers will need to meet prior to the event at a special volunteer meeting at 6 p.m. at Camp Richardson Resort in South Lake Tahoe.

Considered one of the nation’s most beautiful runs, the Lake Tahoe Marathon attracts world-class and recreational athletes to participate in a 26.2-mile run winding down the west shore of Lake Tahoe and climbing to points as high as 6,800 feet.

In addition to the marathon, other races include a wheelchair marathon, marathon relays, half marathon, 10K run, 10K race walk, 5K run, ultra three day stage marathon, a free kids fun run and a new marathon, (the 10K team competition).

For non-racers there is the Sports & Fitness Expo and a sunset pasta cruise aboard the Tahoe Queen as well as spectator transportation options.
