Lakers beat up on Whittell soccer teams

Chad Sellmer, Tribune staff writer

Both the Whittell girls and boys’ soccer teams fell on the road to strong North Tahoe squads Thursday afternoon.

On the girls’ side, the Warriors lost to the Lakers by a score of 3-0.

“They are a really great team and always have been,” said Whittell coach Jane Gadbois. “They only lost five starters from last year. We have to have heart and desire and I think some of the girls don’t realize this is their senior year and this is it. We need to get that mentality back.”

The girls play Lovelock at home Saturday beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Gadbois plans to focus on ball handling more in practice this week.

“We need to work on combination passes and settling the ball down, playing like we can,” she said. “We seem to rise and fall to the occasion and we need to play at our own level at all times.”

The boys’ team was beaten by the Lakers 9-0.

“We came out soft and weren’t ready to play,” said Warriors’ coach Steve Maltase. “It’s just a matter of effort right now and getting guys back who are injured.”

Three starters are currently out of the boys’ lineup with injuries: Chase Bartholomew, Justin Darrow and Mike Flanagan.

The boys play next at Incline on Tuesday.
