Lancers rout Vikings

Finding positives in the aftermath of playing perennial state football title contender McQueen can be as challenging as snagging the last slice of pizza at a fraternity party.

But South Tahoe High co-coach Chris Morgan was pleased with the running of junior back Grant Swinney and tackling of safety Ryan Kraw in a 55-7 loss to the defending 4A Northern Region champs Friday in Reno.

Swinney rushed for 134 yards, including a 56-yard second-quarter touchdown romp, as the Vikings ended the Lancers’ early season shutout string at five quarters. McQueen blanked Douglas 56-0 in its opener.

“You look at the final score and you think McQueen kicked our butts, but we still had a lot of good things come out of it,” Morgan said. “Because we’re still growing and learning, obviously we had mistakes, and we are learning to play at that level.

“The good thing is South Tahoe saw what a good football team does. Hopefully, we’ll see what it takes to get to that level.”

South Tahoe stopped McQueen on its first offensive series, but a fumbled punt gave the Lancers a quick strike at the Viking 5.

“You make a mistake like that and McQueen is going to capitalize on it,” Morgan said.

McQueen’s Mohu and Corey Patin returned turnovers for touchdowns during McQueen’s 39-point first quarter.

The Vikings (0-2) play host to Reno (2-0) in the division opener for both teams on Saturday.
