Little League All-Stars ready for showdown with Reno Continental

The 11-12 South Lake Tahoe All-Stars were forced to play catchup in their first game of the Little League district tournament Sunday in Gardnerville. The team beat Sparks American 8-4 to advance to today’s second round.

South Tahoe fell behind early, but used a couple of home runs to outlast Sparks.

The turning point came in the third inning when Stephen Yarrow belted a home run to get South Tahoe going.

“That was the spark we needed,” South Tahoe manager Mark Shehadi said. “After that, we had a couple of big innings.”

That same inning, Alex Yure blasted a homer of his own. With runners on first and second, Yure’s shot put the all-stars ahead for good, 5-3.

“I gave him a two-strike bunt sign,” Shehadi said. “But the next pitch was in the dirt to advance the runner and then he hit the next one over the fence.”

Buck Pershing pitched two innings of scoreless ball to preserve the win for South Tahoe.

“He was throwing like Greg Maddux,” Shehadi said. “And that was after he had a big collision at home.”

The next test for South Tahoe will come today at 6:30 p.m. when the all-stars take the field against Reno Continental. Shehadi said the team is ready to take on the tournament favorites.

“We’re ready to shock the world,” Shehadi said. “The kids never gave up. The bats won the first ball game. It’s nice to have a coaching staff who teaches how to hit and that was what this staff did.”
