Local hockey players Ty Hutton, 9, and Tyler Dill, 10, had the privilege to compete in the ninth annual Silver Sticks International Hockey Tournament earlier this year in Pelham Falls, Ontario.

Playing on a tournament team for the Capital Thunder, which won its regional Tournament in San Jose over the Thanksgiving weekend, enabled the boys to qualify to play in Canada.

After the team’s pool play games, the team was seeded in the tournament’s “B” division and faced the Columbus Flames in the quarterfinals.

Dill scored the winning goal with 33 seconds left in the Thunder’s 4-3 victory. The goal was Dill’s second of the game and he also assisted on another score. Hutton made 18 saves in goal, including several stops on breakaways.

In the semifinal round, the Thunder faced the Dallas, Texas Bulldogs. Dill again provided the winning goal, notching the game’s only score in the second period. Hutton was flawless in goal, making 21 saves.

The team didn’t have the same fortune in the championship game. Against the Strathroy Jr. Rockets of South Huron Ontario, Canada, the Thunder came up short, losing 6-3. Dill had two goals and Hutton made 14 saves.
