Local skiers win freeskiing titles

Staff

The World Tour of Freeskiing concluded with the final event of the season in Valdez, Alaska, crowning Volant’s Shane McConkey of Squaw Valley, Calif. the overall Tour champion. The female title went to Salomon’s Wendy Fisher, who resides in Crested Butte, Colo., and is a former U.S. Ski Team member from Incline Village, Nev. Points for the Tour title are cumulative throughout the entire season from the specified World Tour events.

Earlier in the season McConkey won the SAAB U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Championship in Crested Butte, Colo., and the Red Snowthrill in Chamonix, France. Fisher earned wins in Las Lenas, Argentina and at the Red Bull Snowthrill in Chamonix and a second-place finish in Swatch Canadian event in Whistler/Blackcomb. The final event of the season, the Red Bull World Extreme Skiing Championship, was held in Valdez, Alaska two weeks ago on some of the world’s most difficult terrain. Adam Arnaud of Chamonix, France earned the title of the WESC event champion and Francine Moreillon of Lausanna, Switzerland the female winner. McConkey was unable to compete at WESC due to injury and Fisher finished third.

The International Tour included five events run by organizers such as Mountain Sports International, Jens Hoffman, Crested Butte Mountain Resort, Martina Diez, and the World Extreme Skiing Board of Directors. Athletes from around the world competed in events that were televised nationally on ESPN2 and internationally distributed by Planet Watch.

“It was an amazing season filled with incredible athleticism. We look forward to an even better year next year with an additional Tour event scheduled in Europe and increased ski area interest in hosting regional and local feeder events,” said IFSA Vice President Lhotse Merriam.
