Local soccer team earns first-place honors

The Tahoe Lightning, an under-14 girls’ soccer team from the South Shore, recently took first place with a 6-0-4 record in the California Youth Soccer Association’s District IV League.

Tahoe won its last four games in Sacramento to finish the season undefeated and only allowed six goals in 10 games.

The Lightning’s final game of the season was against the Rocklin Blue Angels, who were also undefeated. But Tahoe scored two goals and held Rocklin to only one shot on goal in a 2-1 victory. The goalkeeping tandem of Hannah Daly and Carly Mathat led the defense against the Blue Angels.

The Lightning completed their sixth season with a large contingent of players that have played together since the team formed in 2001 as an Under-9 squad.

Original team members include Savannah Cherry, Erica Kolari, Caitie Kushner, Marina Palmieri and Tamara Snight. Amy Rich and Briana Adams joined the team a year later, then Erika Cook, Dailee Perucci and Daly joined for the third season. Gabriella Tracy and Krystina Kane first played with the team in the fall of 2003. The older U-14 players include Helaine Berris, Leah Kennedy and Mathat. Late additions to this year’s team include Cynthia Terry and Janelle Perasso.

The Tahoe Lightning is coached by Paul Kushner, Ed Cook, Bill Cherry and Scott Kennedy.
