Bernal leads freshman to Wooster win

Special to the Tribune

The South Tahoe freshman football team continued its winning ways with a 36-12 victory over Wooster High on Thursday.

Jacob Bernal and his big offensive line led the way as Bernal racked up 250 yards and four touchdowns, two of which were more than 50 yards apiece. Noah Jackson carried the ball well when replacing Bernal. Jackson scored a touchdown on a play called the slice, which head coach Scott Shehadi is known for calling early and often.

The defense dominated the Wooster offensive line as they maintained heavy pressure on the quarterback and wide receivers who couldn’t get past the jam of cornerbacks Diego Rogers and Noah Jackson. Linebackers Andrew Hererra and Danny Carranza played physical football, causing havoc in the backfield as blitzes came from every direction disrupting the Wooster spread attack.

“This defense is very good and disciplined” said defensive coordinator Tony Sunzeri. “They are tough, physical and their goal on every play is to hit hard and get the ball back into our offense’s hands.”

UP NEXT: The freshman football team has a bye week and its next game is at home against Elko on Thursday, Oct. 10.
