The Vikings looked like they were having fun on the field Saturday.

The combinations were there, the girls were calling out plays and executing as a team. The Vikings looked like they had shaken off the 1-1 Whittell tie of last week.

“Overall, bouncing back from the Whittell game attitude wise, the girls looked like they really liked each other and were having fun,” South Tahoe coach Jeremy Evans said.

The girls soccer team cruised to a 6-0 win against Sparks at South Tahoe High School on Saturday. The score actually should have been much more lopsided, but one girl stood in South Tahoe’s way.

“Flat out, that goalie was the best goalie I’ve seen in my last couple years,” Evans said. “She’s only a freshman, and by far the best goalie I’ve seen. I think she was frustrating our girls in the first half because a lot of the shots that normally went in against other teams weren’t going in.”

But South Tahoe kept shooting, and throughout the first half onslaught three of those shots found net.

Brittany Hubberts booted a goal in the first minute for South Tahoe off an assist from Allie King.

Jordyn Dion followed up with an unassisted goal seven minutes later.

The Vikings now had a 2-0 lead 10 minutes into the game, but Sparks’ goalkeeper started picking up South Tahoe’s offensive rhythm. She held the Vikings off until the final six minutes of the half.

Molly Jaggard sent a pass to Kendall Eagan, who blasted the ball past Sparks’ brick-wall goalie to give South Tahoe a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Sparks’ goalkeeper continued to stifle South Tahoe’s offense in the second half, but the Vikings started exhibiting more control.

“We had a little more composure hitting posts, and I was actually happy with the finish,” Evans said.

South Tahoe added another three goals.

Dion netted her second goal of the day five minutes into the second half. She brought the ball in from the side, found her shot and drilled the ball past the charging goalkeeper.

Dion almost netted her third goal 25 minutes later. She sent a threatening shot at Sparks, but the goalkeeper deflected. Cassidy Jackson was there to follow it in for a 5-0 lead.

Dion eventually did get the hat trick though with less than four minutes remaining.

King sent the ball up to Dion, who sent the ball toward the goal with the intention of an assist. But Dion’s shots seemed to be finding net all day, and this was no different. The ball slid under the diving goalkeeper and bounced off the goalpost into the box. Dion then offered apologies to her teammate for not setting up the assist better.

Saturday was the girls’ last home game before a road stretch. They now hit the road for the next three games.

“We do better on our home field, but these girls have to learn how to adjust,” Evans said. “We have to learn how to be a better road team. Everything we want to do will be on the road this year.”

UP NEXT: The girls pay at Fallon Thursday, Fernley Saturday and in Truckee Tuesday. The boys will host Fallon at 4 p.m. Thursday and Fernley at 1 p.m. Saturday.
