Hello fellow anglers. It is Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer fun. The fishing action is picking up around our local area as well as surrounding areas.

Just ask Ken and Annette Oberson, of Gardnerville, Nev. The couple took a trip to New Melones Reservoir, Calif., on May 15 to do some crappie fishing. When they arrived early, they decided to do a little bass fishing. Annette was tossing a plastic bait called a Weenie while Ken assembled their large net, just in case they get the big one. Annette thought she had caught the bottom when Ken noticed that the bottom was swimming away. In fact, it was actually a large fish. Ken maneuvered the boat to allow Annette to fight and play the fish out. About 45 minutes later, Ken netted what was on the other end of her line. A 15-pound large mouth bass, 29 inches long with a 23-inch girth. It was all done using an 8-pound Stren line and a lot of patience, experience and team work. LAKE TAHOE: Best areas have been Dollar and Sugar Pine points. Fishing 130 to 200 feet of water right on the bottom with a flasher and a live minnow. Gene St. Dennis reported mackinaw in the 2-to 5-pound class with a few in the 7-to 12-pound class. Anglers are having fair success drifting live minnows near Cave Rock in 50 to 150 feet of water, or look for the rock pile north of the Cave Rock launch. TROUT CREEK, UPPER TRUCKEE RIVERS AND TAYLOR CREEK: Closed to all fishing until July 1.

SILVER LAKE: The ramp is open and some nice mackinaws have been brought in at 2-to 5-pounds. Shore anglers are doing fair using powerbait or night crawlers.

CAPLES LAKE: The El Dorado Irrigation District boat launch is open on the north end of the lake. The Caples lake general store and boat launch is also open. TJ, JP, Jesse and Heather from the U.S. Virgin Islands rented a boat this week and caught a nice 14-inch rainbow. Ken Hucthinson (the front desk manager of Kirkwood Lodge) caught a 12-pound and a 7-pound mackinaw a couple weeks ago, but would not disclose the location. Shore fishing is good if you do not mind a hike down to the Woods Creek area. The lake is close to capacity and will stay that way through most of the year. BLUE LAKES ROAD: Open to the fourth gate, which is 7.4 miles in.

WOLF CREEK ROAD, SCHNEIDER COW CAMP AND PLEASANT VALLEY: Open as of May 22..

BURNSIDE LAKE: The road is now open. I have not received any fishing reports.

WOODS LAKE: As of May 23 the road was not open.

RED LAKE: Fishing is fair to slow. The best action is early morning with small spinners, kastmaster lures or inflated worms.

CARSON RIVERS: Last week the California Department of Fish and Game planted two loads of catchable rainbow trout. This week the Alpine County Fish Commission planted some nice 2-to 4-pound trout in both the east and west forks. In talking with the new, new manager of the Carson River Resort, Chad Machado, he told me the rivers are running well and have a slight stain but are very fishable and loaded with trout. Chad has been with the resort for many years part time and is experienced with fishing the local area. Chad is making some changes in the appearance of the resort, but the great hospitality will stay the same. INDIAN CREEK RES: The campground and boat ramp areas are open. The fishing is fair for shore anglers using inflated crawlers, salmon peach or sherbet powerbait near the tent camp area or by the dam. Anglers have also had luck throwing kastmasters or Thomas Buoyant spoons off the dam. Float tubers have done well in the shallow end of the cove area using brown or green buggers.
