Whittell’s Lady Warriors lost to a tough Pyramid Lake team 57-40 Saturday.

The visiting Lakers (12-1, 6-0 IV Northern) jumped out to a 16-10 lead in the first quarter that Whittell could never cut back down.

With long passes down court, the Lakers were able to beat the Lady Warriors to the basket for some easy layups.

“Our girls matched their intensity. We made some shots, got organized. The main thing was they kept breaking out and we didn’t have anybody back. We need a protector back there, so we’re going to work on that,” Whittell coach Tom Esposito said. “I thought we played pretty good, with the amount of time we’ve been playing together and facing a group like that.”

Patricia Christa and Jenica Shaw led the Lakers’ offense, each scoring 20 points. Jakoby Stump scored 10.

Zoe Bertz led Whittell’s offense, scoring 11 points and snagging 17 rebounds. Daria Sharon scored 10, Kelsey Kjer and Chelsea Aguirre Rodriguez each scored six and Tori Jimenez scored five.

With the loss, Whittell falls to 4-7, 2-3 IV Northern. But with a hard-fought loss to a tough team, Esposito is left looking on the bright side for his team’s prospects.

“I think we’ve hit a point where we realize we are capable of competing with anybody in this league,” he said.
