South Tahoe made its move 30 seconds into the second half.

Tran Khoa flew down the wing with tight control of the ball and popped off a perfect pass to Austin Williams, who was ready in front of Elko’s goal. Williams didn’t trap the ball. The senior striker simply diverted its path toward net and took the Indians’ momentum along with the goal.

South Tahoe’s early second-half goal has a huge hit for Elko. In the next 15 minutes, the Vikings scored two more goals en route to a 4-0 victory at South Tahoe High School on Friday.

“We just played today,” South Tahoe head coach Ben Hannah said. “We were crisp. We were sharp. Our communication is improving. They just brought it 110 percent for 80 minutes.”

South Tahoe controlled the pace of the game in the first half, but Elko’s goalkeeper was keeping the shots out of the net. One of Derek Caro’s shots managed to sneak through. South Tahoe entered halftime leading 1-0, but the game was not locked up by any means.

The Vikings came out hard and fast in the second half. Williams and Khoa’s 30-second goal rattled Elko, and the Indians seemed to loss their rhythm. The Vikings took advantage.

“We just gave in on momentum and they kept building on it and building on it,” Elko head coach Bruce Farzier said.

South Tahoe added to its momentum seven minutes later when Caro headed in a corner kick for his second goal of the night, which didn’t make for a bad birthday evening.

South Tahoe found net one more time in the second half. Juan Carlos Martinez, who was having a huge game in center mid, blasted in a final goal off a huge cross from David Rodriguez in the wings.

The bench maintained the shutout for the remainder of the second half.

“The bench stepped in where the starters left off,” Hannah said. “It was just good all the way around.”

Boys top Spring Creek

A rain delay didn’t seem to stall the Vikings’ momentum on Saturday after as the boys beat Spring Creek 3-0 as rain and sleet pelted both teams the entire game.

Despite the sloppy conditions, South Tahoe took a 2-0 lead at half time after goals from Williams and Caro. Diego Garcia and Martinez came through with the assists.

It was a really physical game,” Hannah said, “but it wasn’t as sloppy as I expected given the conditions. So they did a really good job controlling the ball.”

Garcia netted the final goal in the second half off an assist from Tre Charrette.

“It was another good defensive performance so we just played our game and persisted,” Hannah said.

South Tahoe improved to 4-1 in league and leads the Northern 1-A soccer standings in points.

The JV game was called at 2-2 on account of lightening with three minutes to play. The younger Vikings came back after trailing 0-2 at halftime, and played with a lot of heart, Hannah said.
