For the first time, local youth football players took to the gridiron during the spring. A team from South Lake Tahoe competed in a spring tackle league hosted by Excel Athletics, playing seven games at sites in Carson City, Nevada.

South Tahoe won two games during the season, holding its own in each contest despite being undersized and undermanned. Both of the Vikings’ victories were shutouts, and they scored in all seven games.

In addition to local fields, the Vikings practiced on the beach a handful of times during the season. After a beach practice in early May, the team finished up with a swim in Lake Tahoe.

South Tahoe’s coaching staff included head coach Chris Klug along with assistants Mike Smiley, Jim Klug, Steve Klug and Elliot Pekar. The team featured 14 local players from the South Shore.
