STATELINE — On its home links for the Div. III Northern League championships Thursday, May 12, the Whittell boys golf team earned a spot at state. The Warriors took second in the regional tournament played at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, led by a 91 from senior Colin Buchholz.
Whittell shot a 481 at regionals, finishing second to champion North Tahoe by 23 strokes. Incline earned the North’s final state spot from Thursday’s tournament with a team score of 493. The competition also included Battle Mountain, Yerington, Sierra Lutheran, Wells, Sage Ridge, Mineral County and Jackpot.
Buchholz led Whittell with a 91 to finish seventh overall at regionals. Incline’s Mitchell Cornell carded a 78 to win the individual regional title. The Warriors’ top five golfers all finished within the field’s top 13 with sub-100 scores.
Senior Palmer Chaplin shot a 95 on Thursday to finish ninth, sophomores Alex Byer and Jonathan Duffy each carded a 98 to tie for 11th, and senior Matt Davis had a 99 to place 13th. Sophomore Nic Buchholz also played for Whittell, shooting a 117 to finish tied for 29th.
In addition to North Tahoe, Whittell and Incline, five individuals qualified for state based on their play at Edgewood. Griffin Cooper of Yerington (82, second), Alan Rangel of Battle Mountain (97, 10th), Jake Cummings of Sierra Lutheran (100, 14th), Brody Alton of Wells (103, 16th), Austin Wallock of Battle Mountain (105, t-17th) and Luke Escamilla of Wells (105, t-17th) each earned state berths.
At the Div. III Southern League championships played Thursday at White Pine County Golf Course in Ely, Nevada, Needles (Calif.), White Pine (Ely) and Lake Mead Academy (Henderson, Nev.) each advanced to the state tournament. The Div. III State championships will be played over two rounds Tuesday and Wednesday, May 17-18, at Mountain Falls Golf Club in Pahrump, Nevada.
