Loggers keep rolling

Steve Yingling, Tribune sports editor

The Sierra Tahoe Loggers raised their record to 10-1 with a doubleheader sweep of Spanish Springs last weekend.

Allan McDermott pitched five-hit ball and fanned seven through five innings and Marcus McKinnon and A.J. Russo combined for five hits as the Loggers won the opener 13-3.

In game two, McKinnon and Kevin Schlange hit back-to-back doubles to trigger a four-run sixth inning, breaking a 2-2 tie and lifting the Loggers to a 6-4 victory.

Schlange wound up 3 for 3, while Eli Bently and Andrew Mayne collected two hits apiece to support six strong innings from Logger pitcher Robert Lee. Lee was two over the minimum through five innings but tired in the sixth. Chad Walling came on to record the save.

One of McKinnon’s two hits in the opener went for three bases. He also knocked in three runs and scored three times. Russo also drove home three runs.

The Logers open the Red Dog Classic on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Governor’s Bowl in Reno.

According to Loggers’ coach Don Amaral, Nick Heng, Ryan Gosh and Jamie Moore provided strong overall play and Jacob Hash excelled on the mound as the 12- to 15-year-old club won two of three games from the Douglas Tigers to improve to 4-2. The team travels to Chico this weekend.
