Maltase begins serving NIAA suspension

Whittell High boys soccer coach Steve Maltase didn’t accompany his team to ROP on Wednesday, but his squad responded without his presence, winning the nonleague game 7-1.

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association suspended Maltase for four games after he pulled his team off the field 25 minutes into the Warriors’ game with North Tahoe on Saturday.

“It was a bad situation that I didn’t want to subject my players to,” Maltase said. “I have to deal with the consequences of my decision.”

The fifth-year boys soccer coach will also miss games with Truckee on Wednesday, White Pine on Oct. 13 and Lund on Oct. 14.

Assistant coach John Heeran is coaching the team while Maltase serves the suspension.

Six different Warriors scored against the Raiders. Nestor Flores scored twice, while Pat Heeran one, Justin Haynes, Oscar Cortez, Argenis Flores and Dan Faccinetti netted one goal.

Whittell, which spanked Fernley 5-1 last Friday, is 10-5-1.
