Massive fight card planned for Caesars Tahoe

Steve Yingling

When they weigh in before the Oct. 13 fights at Caesars Tahoe, at least the boxers won’t have to worry about making weight.

A pair of 10-round heavyweight bouts headline the Cedric Kushner Productions’ card, including Dale Crowe, who now carries the unfortunate label of being the fighter responsible for nearly killing former champion Greg Page in March.

Crowe (21-4-1) of Cincinnati, Ohio, last fought against two-time heavyweight champion Michael Moorer in July and his ring work that night was brief and bloody. An accidental headbutt ended the bout with in the fifth round. Moorer was making his third comeback fight and appeared to be in control when the fight was ruled a technical draw.

The accidental headbutt occurred in the first round when Moorer’s head collided with Crowe’s face, leaving a cut above the latter fighter’s right eye. The cut reopened in the fifth round, prompting ringside doctors to advise the referee to stop the bout.

The fight was Crowe’s first since he sent the 43-year-old Page to the canvas with head injuries the former champion hasn’t recovered from.

“They aren’t billing me as the guy who almost killed former heavyweight champion Greg Page, but let’s face it, that’s what I’m known for right now. I don’t like it, but that’s just the way it is,” Crowe told the Cincinnati Enquirer in July before the Moorer fight.

On the Caesars Tahoe card, Crowe will fight Talmadge Griffis (19-1-2, 13 knockouts) of Colorado Springs, Colo. Crowe should carry more than 20 pounds into the ring against Griffis, who fought at 214 when he scored a second-round technical knockout of Lovy Page in his last bout.

Frankie Swindell, a veteran heavyweight from Nashville, Tenn., will tangle with Sherman “Tank” Williams of Nashville, Tenn., in the other 10-round co-feature event.

Swindell was stopped by current heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman in August of 2000. Swindell’s corner discontinued the bout after the seventh round when a tear in his left eye prevented him from seeing Rahman’s right hands. The 37-year-old hasn’t fought since then.

Swindell (37-20-3) received $16,500 for the night’s work.

Williams, who has half the fights as Swindell, brings an 18-6-1 record into their heavyweight bout.

Six additional heavyweight fights are planned, including bouts featuring Duncan Dokiwari and Samuel Peters of Las Vegas and David Vedder of San Jose.

The heavyweight extravaganza will only vary once from the big boppers when junior bantamweights Naoka Kumagi of Japan and Marilyn Salcido of Rialto, Calif., get it on in a four-rounder.
