Mendes waiting for the call

Sunday night was like 1,000 Christmas Eves rolled into one for Jonna Mendes.

And today’s payoff could mean a chance at history.

The 18-year-old South Shore member of the U.S. Women’s Alpine Ski Team finds out today if she’ll be selected to the 1998 Winter Olympic team.

“I hope they call soon,” joked Mendes, “before this ulcer grows any more.”

Mendes, who is home in South Lake Tahoe, expects a phone call from team coaches prior to today’s 4 p.m. announcement of the team. If selected, she’ll most likely ski in the super-G. But it’s possible that, like teammate Picabo Street, she’ll compete in both speed events – the super-G and downhill.

Mendes has been finishing consistently in the top-40 in both disciplines, earning enough World Cup points to make her among the top three Americans.
