Monos seventh after first round of state tourney

What a round!

Competing as an individual qualifier, South Tahoe High’s Kalotina Monos opened up first round play at the Nevada state girls golf tournament in Henderson, with a personal-best round of 80.

“I can’t believe it,” Monos said from her hotel room in Las Vegas. “I was totally in the zone.”

With Black Mountain Golf Course providing the backdrop, Monos came out firing and never looked back. Her 7-over round of 80 has her on the leaderboard in seventh place for the state championship.

Her score was also tops among her peers from the Northern Nevada schools.

“She was absolutely on fire,” Viking coach Marsha Butler said.

While Monos will relish the day, she knows (today) she goes back to work with a chance to walk away with a title.

“I just hope I can do it again tomorrow,” she said. “But this has been the best day of my life. I did my best and more, and everyone I love was there to watch me.”
