Jonny Moseley has verbally committed to playing in the Isuzu Celebrity Golf Championships July 7-12 at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Stateline.

Moseley will be officially included on the tournament list once he completes a player application and returns it to NBC Sports in New York, according to tournament public relations director Phil Weidinger.

“I think it’s great for the tournament. He represents new blood, a new face,” Weidinger said.

Moseley, 23, grabbed the international spotlight by winning the gold medal in the freestyle mogul event during the 1998 Nagano Olympics. His infectious personality and handsome face made him an instant hit with sports fans worldwide.

“He captured the imagination of America and adds a fresh perspective. He’ll be great for the gate and a huge fan attraction,” Weidinger said.

In other celebrity golf notes, no word on Michael Jordan’s attendance will be made until the conclusion of the NBA playoffs. Jordan, the perennial fan favorite, has played in six of the eight events at Edgewood. He missed last year due to July 4th family commitments and three years ago while playing minor league baseball.

“Obviously we’d love to have Michael here. He’s the biggest name athlete alive. He knows what he means to the tournament. We’ll just have to wait and see,” Weidinger said.

New faces this year will include speedskater Dan Janzen, football player Tim Brown, tennis player Jim Courier, football player Marshall Faulk, basketball player Rex Chapman, actor Samuel L. Jackson, jockey Corey Nakatani, coach Mike Ditka, coach Davey Johnson, ESPN announcer Dan Patrick and actor John O’Hurley.

A core group of players have already committed, including John Elway, Jerry Rice, Danny Ainge, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Jack Wagner, Mike Modano, Bill Laimbeer, Jim McMahon, Rick Rhoden and Billy Joe Tolliver (with Cheeseburger).

Recognizable players who will not participate this year, as of May 26, include Oscar De La Hoya, Charles Barkley and Alice Cooper.
