Mother, daughter have their day in Classic

ZEPHYR COVE – As mother and daughter, Colleen Witt and Becky Smiser have shared many experiences.

But on Sunday they enjoyed a first – winning a tennis tournament together. Witt and Smiser of San Diego dispatched the South Shore duo of Karla Johnston and Linda Hixenbaugh 6-4 and 6-3 to capture the ladies division in the Yonex Tahoe Classic – the 23rd edition of the doubles tournament.

“I definitely knew a lot of people weren’t here in the tournament who could have beaten us, so we thought this would be our shot,” said a modest Witt.

Mother-and-daughter tournament titles have eluded Witt and Smiser, a vacation home owner in Zephyr Cove, when they competed at less than 100 percent.

“Mom almost made me cry, because she said this was our chance because we were both feeling good and neither of us was injured,” Witt said.

Hixenbaugh and Johnston won three matches to make the final, including a hard-fought three-setter against Carson City’s Peggy Twedt and former Carson City resident Jodie Koerner in the semifinals.

The 28-year-old Witt also teamed with Zephyr Cove’s Mike Espinosa to win the mixed B division crown. They overcame a second-set loss to defeat Bob and Jodie Koerner in the finals, 6-2, 4-6 and 6-1.

Kurt Ricter, a former University of Nevada coach, combined with Reno resident Kim Farran to claim the men’s A division championship. They defeated Andy Webb and Marc Weinstein of the Bay Area, 6-0 and 6-4. Ricter and Farran didn’t drop a set en route to the title.

Ricter and Farran dethroned last year’s champions Mark Peterson and Randy Houston 7-6 and 6-2 in the semifinal round. Peterson and Houston, however, rebounded to defend their century division championship, defeating Dick Noel and Chuck Beatty of Bakersfield 5-7, 7-5, 7-5.

“It was the best match of the tourney. They were a fraction away from losing a couple of times,” said tournament director Hersh Herschman.

South Tahoe High tennis coach Kyle Horvath and Ryan Johnston were eliminated by Webb and Weinstein in the semifinals, 6-2, 4-6, 3-6.

Ricter and Witt were the only players to win multiple titles. Ricter and Kristen Davenport downed the local team of Ryan Johnston and Vanessa Smaine 6-4 and 6-2 in the mixed A championship match.

Herschman defended his super century championship, as he and partner Butch Stillman of Temecula fended off Hight Redmond and Jack Hart of Indian Wells, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

“We outvolleyed them and closed the net,” Herschman said.

Herschman and Stillman didn’t drop a set in their three matches.
