Mustangs hand Vikings first division loss

Staff report

Gary Prescott drilled his first varsity baseball home run in the first inning, but little went right for the Vikings after that on Thursday.

Damonte Ranch used a nine-run third inning to route South Tahoe 14-2 in a battle of unbeaten Sierra Division baseball teams in Reno.

The Vikings led 1-0 and 2-1, but the Mustangs scored 13 unanswered runs to close out the victory in five innings.

“They are a real good team,” said STHS coach Matt Tillson. “Damonte and Manogue are probably the two-best teams (in the area).”

South Tahoe scored its final run in the second inning. After Jason Winslow doubled, Kyle DiGrande singled him to third, then Matt Marsh plated Winslow by executing a hit and run.

Kevin Yelles and Ivan Trebotich also had hits for the Vikings (7-8 overall, 3-1 division).

Winslow started on the mound. Tillson was able to give Max Simonian and Joel Morris – two of the club’s highly touted pitchers who have received little work thus far – some time on the mound. Simonian pitched a scoreless inning.

Tillson tentatively plans to pitch Max DeLallo and Otto Trebotich against the Mustangs on Saturday. The doubleheader begins at 10 a.m. at Damonte Ranch.
