New faces take over STHS golf

Three returners, talented freshman to lead Vikes in 2006

For the past few seasons, South Tahoe High girls’ golf coach Marsha Butler relied on Mollie Novasel and Jen Bigelow to carry the team. While Novasel and Bigelow established themselves as two of the top golfers in the Northern 4A, the players in their shadow quietly worked on their games.

Now those players must become team leaders.

“We are excited about the season, even though we lost our top girls from state,” said Butler, who also lost senior Jenelle Alessi. “It’s going to be a very difficult year because we lost our top three players from last year. It’s going to be a growing year because we are very limited in experience.”

Senior Sara Morris and juniors Nicole Uibel and Bernadette Schneeberg will team up with freshman Alexis Holmes as South Tahoe’s top four players. At a recent preseason invitational hosted by McQueen, Holmes shot a 96 to lead the Vikings, who finished third out of six teams.

South Tahoe isn’t expected to qualify for the state tournament for the first time since 2002, but the Vikings should make the regional tournament. The top four teams from the Sierra League qualify for zone.

At last week’s preseason tournament, the VIkings finished behind defending Northern 4A champion Galena and three strokes behind preseason Sierra League favorite Carson.

“It is a building year in that they are willing to listen and willing to grow,” Butler said. “But we have a neat squad in that everybody is willing to work hard, and a lot of them are showing up early for practice. I am also really impressed that Alexis, as a freshman, came ready to play. I think there is a good chance we can make it to zone and a good chance we can get one player to state again.”

It remains to be seen who that one person will be. But when the season starts on Tuesday at Genoa Lakes Golf Club, South Tahoe’s top four players of Holmes, Morris, Uibel and Schneeberg are expected to jockey for the top spot.

Behind them will be Blaire Segal and Ali Martinez, who has been on the team the past few years but finally cracked into the top six this season. The Vikings’ only home event is on Sept. 19 at Lake Tahoe Golf Course.
