Yosemite road opens

Yosemite hopefuls, start your engines.

Highway 120 from Lee Vining to Yosemite is scheduled to open at noon on Friday, May 24.

The National Park Road service intended to open the road on Wednesday, but were delayed by recent snowstorms.

Ebbetts Pass opened on Thursday. Sonora and Monitor pass are also open.

Fatten up fish

Thinking he had a new Nevada state record for the largest mountain whitefish, South Lake Tahoe resident Danny Salvador learned that his Tahoe prize was record size, but not record weight.

You need both to get your name in the books, even if it’s a rare catch.

Salvador caught a slim 17-inch fish in Lake Tahoe at Cave Rock early Thursday morning, using a night crawler.

The record-holding mountain whitefish is 16.25 inches and 2 pounds, 14 ounces.

Salvador has been fishing Lake Tahoe for four years and has never caught a mountain whitefish.

“I thought there were only four fish that came out of Tahoe: salmon, rainbow trout, brown trout and Mackinaw … (but) there’s five fish in the Lake,” he said.

Last day for Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley USA

On Saturday, rock group Red Eye will perform at Alpine Meadows. Cadence will perform on Sunday. Monday marks the resort’s last day of lift operation this year.

Drink specials will be offered all weekend.

Squaw Valley USA will also close Monday.

Reduced late-season tickets are $38 for adults, $19 for juniors and seniors and kids 12 and under are $5. All lift tickets include free pool and spa use.
