Noe stands up for boarders

Easter weekend kept the field for Tahoe Challenge Boarder Motocross small and quick, but North Shore rider Brian Noe had enough time to change trends.

Noe, the man behind Northstar-at-Tahoe’s snowboard park, won the pro division of the event, which combines motocross and snowboard cross. The race took place Saturday on the motocross course at the Silver State Motorsports Complex in Carson City, then moved to Kirkwood Mountain Resort’s Snowsnake Gully for Sunday’s snowboard cross.

“The sponsor, Kirkwood, was awesome,” said local organizer Ken Reid. “They took care of us. At Silver State Raceway, the course was in really great shape.”

Noe reversed the motocross racers’ tendency to dominate, a trend that has been part of the series since it started five years ago at Mammoth, Calif. Since then, it has expanded northward, and this weekend’s event was the second at Kirkwood and Silver Sate.

The race format features two heats each of motocross and snowboard cross in each division, and the competitor with the best total of finishes wins. Since it seems easier for a snowboarder to stay up through a one-run snowboard cross than a snowboarder to pick up time on a six-to-eight-lap motocross race, motocross has had the advantage. Noe, though, was just as strong in the motocross portion, taking third overall.

Event promoter Don Szabo anticipates the event will be back next season.

“Oh yeah,” he said. “We’ll be back.”
