Novotny fourth in JOs

Christine Novotny of Glenbrook combined two sizzling slalom runs to finish fourth in slalom at the USSA/Rolex Junior II Olympic Alpine Championships on Sunday at Mammoth Lakes.

Novotny’s two-run time of 1 minute, 45.36 seconds was nearly two seconds behind winner Brittany Kimble of Bend, Ore.

Megan Martin of Truckee was fifth in 1:45.54.

Sam Lubing of Jackson, Wyoming, won the men’s giant slalom with a clocking of 1:30.56.

Bryan Richmond of Truckee was fifth at 1:32.29.

Evan Friedman of Park City, Utah, opened the J2 Olympics by winning the men’s slalom on Saturday.

South Tahoe High finished ninth among 13 schools at the Northern Nevada Conference golf tournament Monday at Sierra Sage Golf Course.

Reno edged Galena by one stroke, 398 to 399, to win the first of six conference tournaments. Combined scoring over the six tournaments will determine the region’s eight zone participants.

South Tahoe’s five golfers took 437 strokes over 18 holes, including Patrick Curtis 83, Patrick Kelly 85, Sean Fannan 87, James Peterson 91 and Ricky Wasilchuk 91.

“We didn’t play well, but we’re still in the running,” said STHS coach Mike Patterson. “I was expecting scores in the low- and mid-80s because these guys have been averaging in the low 40s for nine holes.”

Reno’s Jake Wolf was low medalist with a 1-under-par 70. Travis Whisman of Galena and Douglas’ Greg Bodenstein were next with 73s.
