Battling youth and inexperience, the Whittell High Alpine team finished fifth overall out of five teams at the school’s opening-season race Wednesday at Alpine Meadows.

“We’ll improve quite a bit by the end of the season. By the end, barring injuries, we should be competitive for third place,” said team advisor Mike Kiger, whose squad yearly finds itself in a race for third place behind perineal powers Truckee and North Tahoe.

Truckee was first at 349 points, with North Tahoe 345, Incline 259 and Douglas 224. The Warriors earned 187 points.

Sophomore Corky Novotny’s fourth-place performance led the girls to a third-place finish with 136 points. Freshmen Zoe Thompson, Mia Thompson and Jessica Gibbs were 14th, 16th and 26th, respectively. Sophomore Amber Merkel was 28th. Truckee was second with 170 points behind North Tahoe’s 177.

On the boys side, Whittell sophomores Eric Sanders, Jade Haynes and Dennis Lucas were 30th, 31st and 32nd. Four boys did not finish, as Whittell racked up just 51 points. Douglas was the next closest boys team with 105 points. Truckee was first at 179 points.
