Orlich captures third straight section titl

Former South Tahoe High coach Tom Orlich directed Clovis West to its third straight Central Section Division I boys’ basketball title on Saturday in Fresno.

Clovis West, ranked 22nd in the lastest USA Today Super 25 poll, held off Edison 63-59 to win the championship and improve to 29-2.

The Eagles had hoped that their impressive record and national ranking would lead to a No. 1 seeding for the California state tournament. However, Clovis West was seeded second behind Westchester of Los Angeles (24-6).

“There won’t be any more easy games for us,” Orlich told the Fresno Bee on Saturday night. “I felt that winning this game would do that. We feel we will be the No. 1 seed in state.”

Still, the Eagles gained a first-round bye and will play host to the winner of today’s Taft-Thousand Oaks matchup on Tuesday.

If the Eagles can win three more games, they will advance to the state finals March 18 at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

Orlich coached South Tahoe to two state titles and more than 500 wins during his 25-year career from 1975-2000.
