Pitching, hitting carry 9-10 All-Stars to wins

Kevin Higgins knew his South Lake Tahoe 9-10 All-Stars were ready for the district tournament in Sparks.

“The kids have been working really hard. We’ve had a really hectic practice schedule; everybody hung with us and it really showed this weekend,” said Higgins after his team’s 2-0 start in a four-game pool schedule.

South Lake Tahoe used a bases-clearing triple by Ty Sprock and clutch relief pitching by Leo Trebotich to hold off Carson National 9-5 Sunday at Shadow Mountain Park.

Sprock hit a three-run triple into the right-center-field gap with two out in the bottom of the fifth inning after Carson pulled within 6-5.

“That was the KO punch. That gave us the cushion we needed,” Higgins said.

Trebotich relieved Sprock with two outs in the fifth and got out of a jam and then pitched a scoreless sixth.

South Lake Tahoe’s Kraig Ford was 2 for 2 and Trebotich was 1 for 1 with a sacrifice fly.

South Lake Tahoe also received strong pitching on Saturday as Cody Higgins went the distance in a 13-3 victory over Sparks Centennial.

The manager’s son scattered six hits and struck out four and helped his own cause with two hits and three RBIs.

Trebotich started his perfect weekend at the plate by going 4 for 4. John Cefalu had two hits and three RBIs for the winners.

Next up for the 9-10 All-Stars is an 8 p.m. date Tuesday with Reno American East.

The 11 All-Stars also started tournament play, losing to Reno Continental 11-1 Saturday and Sparks National 11-2 Sunday. South Lake Tahoe will play Carson Valley at 1:30 p.m. today.
