Pop Warner teams forcing foes to fire blanks
Football fans continue to be treated to well-played games, lots of touchdowns and excitement as they watch South Lake Tahoe Pop Warner football.
Last weekend was no exception, with many shutouts on tap.
Upcoming Junior Viking games over the next two weekends will be played at South Tahoe High School, providing many opportunities for local fans to come out and watch.
Posting a convincing “W” was the Junior Midget team, which experienced victory for the first time this season. South Tahoe emerged with a 33-0 shutout over hosting Hawthorne. Severin Nobriga, Chris Diana and Tyler Verhoven scored on touchdown runs of 20 , 40 and 30 yards, respectively. Jack Williams scored on a quarterback sneak and also contributed on defense with a 35-yard punt return. Nobriga posted the extra points, one on a kick and one via a run.
Mike Zapata and Nick Spano were major contributors to the shutout. The Midgets look to continue their winning ways against North Tahoe at STHS on Saturday. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
The Junior Pewees were just as impressive, recording a 33-0 shutout against their Hawthorne foes. A total team effort helped pave the way for Barrett Burghard’s first trip over the goal line and two touchdown passes by Chad Cooney, one each to Gary Prescott and Anthony Corvo.
Cooney also scored after stripping the ball out of the hands of a Hawthorne running back. Prescott kicked an extra point, something not usually successful by the younger players. Corey Madieros caught his first pass and scored on the other touchdown conversion. Other highlights included Zack Williams, who ran 40 yards downfield to make a touchdown-saving tackle.
When the score became lopsided, players were rewarded by playing new positions, including linemen changing roles and taking turns at running back.
The 4-0 Junior Peewees entertain Dayton for a 9:30 a.m. Saturday at STHS.
The Midgets produced a third South Lake Tahoe shutout in their 40-0 win over Winnemucca. The Junior Midgets took the opening drive down the field quickly, with Joey O’Malley taking the ball over the goal line. O’Malley’s second score of the day came on a 66-yard touchdown run. His third trip over the line was the result of a pass from quarterback Evan MacLean.
Ryan Duin scored the final South Tahoe offensive touchdown.
Jared Wood intercepted a Winnemucca pass, running it back for his first touchdown.
The leg of Buck Pershing provided excitement for the fans who made the long trek. His kicking of a 34-yard field goal capped off a day that saw him make three extra-points.
The 4-0 Midgets host North Tahoe this Saturday in a 3:30 p.m. game.
There were also some highlights for the Mitey Mite team in their away game in Carson City. Alex Valdivia’s interception and touchdown-saving crossfield tackle tried to spark South Tahoe. Good tackles by Taylor Zwerdling, nice blocking by Conor Callahan and strong runs by Kohl Zeek just weren’t enough to beat Carson.
Coming home with a 23-0 loss, the South Tahoe team continued its practices this week with a positive attitude as the squad looked forward to this weekend’s game. They will play on South Tahoe High’s Field of Dreams at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
The 3-0 Peewee team enjoyed a bye this past weekend and host Dayton at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at STHS.
