Pop Warner teams lose close contests

Tribune staff report

Even though the South Lake Tahoe Pop Warner teams are struggling for victories, they are more than holding their on against Reno and Carson City teams.

South Lake Tahoe Junior Peewees lost to the Reno 49ers 7-6 last Saturday in their home opener.

Fullback Hunter Lau’s 25-yard run in the fourth quarter pulled the Juniors Peewees to within a punt but the point-after-touchdown try was unsuccessful.

Brandon Jones and Cody Shindelbower led a strong defensive effort, according to coach Casey Tierney.

Next up for the Junior Peewees (0-2) is the Carson Silver tonight at 8 in Carson City.

The South Lake Tahoe Peewees nearly pulled off a last-minute touchdown to tie Carson Blue before losing 20-13 in their home opener.

Zack Williams rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown and Barrett Burghard threw a touchdown pass to Lucas Johnstone. The Peewees drove down inside Carson’s 10-yard line in the closing seconds but couldn’t produce the game-tying score.

South Tahoe’s turbo-charged rushing attack also included 45 yards on seven carries by Jordan Morgan.

Williams also led the Peewees’ defensive effort, making 17 tackles, including four sacks. The team’s gang-tackling effort saw Riley Griffith make 10 tackles and a quarterback sack, Matt Olivares nine, Morgan eight, Jesse Cruz seven, Cody Nelson six, Burghard six, Jordan Yingling six, Adam Laub four and Conner Carpenter three.

The Peewees (0-2) play Reno Eagles at 8 p.m. today in Gardnerville.

South Lake Tahoe’s Midgets had a tough assignment in their home opener, taking on one of the preseason favorites to win the national title. The Junior Midgets lost to the Reno Bulldogs 32-0.

Last year, the team that ousted the Bulldogs from the playoffs went on to win the national title.

“We just made a lot of mistakes and we need to pick it up,” said Midgets coach Victor Villescas.

Despite the tough defeat, Villescas was pleased with the play of quarterback/cornerback Josh Augenfeld, running back Bobby Henning, offensive/defensive lineman Morgan Villescas and linebacker Roger Brown.

The Midgets (1-1) tackle the Sparks Cardinals at 8 p.m. today in Sparks.
