Popular adventure race coming to Tahoe in 2003

The United States’ most popular adventure race will hold its second annual event in the south shore area of Lake Tahoe next Sept. 5-14. Subaru Primal Quest race director, Dan Barger, announced last week that the race would cover 400-plus miles in both Nevada and California.

“The Lake Tahoe region offers some of the world’s most beautiful and challenging natural terrain,” Barger said in a statement. “We know the area very well and look forward to producing an adventure race that will challenge adventurers physically, mentally and emotionally.”

The inaugural event was held this past summer near Telluride, Colo. Subaru sponsors the event, which is televised on the Outdoor Life Network. The total purse is $250,000, with the winning team taking home $100,000.

Teams consist of four members with at least one member having to be female. A total of 100 teams will participate in next year’s event, 25 of them being reserved for professional teams and the other 75 being chosen by a lottery system. The lottery system and registration process begins at noon on Feb. 5. Team entry fees are $6,500 with a deposit of $500 paid by Visa or Mastercard at the time of registration.

The race could last up to 10 days and the course will be kept secret until race day. Caving, mountain biking, hiking, rappelling, white water and flat water paddling, night navigation, orienteering and road biking will be the nine activities covered during the race.
