Probert’s winning ways continues

Christina Probert is in no hurry to lose her amateur standing on the downhill mountain bike circuit, but her winning frequency and pro-like times are making the step up awfully tempting.

Probert, a Tahoe Bike Shop rider, won the expert downhill class in the Rage at the Ranch downhill on Sunday at Donner Ski Ranch. She has yet to lose in her downhill racing career.

“I’ve got a string going on and that’s good,” she said. “The top of the course was a little gnarly and some of the girls took the aggressive line and I took a conservative line. They fell and I kept upright.”

Probert’s winning time of 3 minutes, 41 seconds left her only four seconds off the top pro’s time.

“When I pass her I’ll think about going pro,” said Probert, who made the switch from cross country to downhill racing this year. “They have pro purses in all the local events, so monetarily it could be worth it to go pro, and they’re aren’t too many pro women racing locally.”

John Brown and Geoff Muliska of Tahoe Bike Shop also had impressive performances. Muliska was second in the sport men’s class and Brown was fourth in the 30-34 masters division.

Probert will race at Northstar-at-Tahoe this weekend and compete in her second National Championship Series event the following week in Park City, Utah. She won the NCS in May in Big Bear, Calif.
