SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The largest flatwater standup paddle race in North America returned to the shores of South Lake Tahoe last weekend. South Tahoe SUP’s fourth-annual Race the Lake of the Sky was held Saturday and Sunday off El Dorado Beach, bringing paddlers from across the world to the South Shore.

Race the Lake of the Sky kicked off Saturday with the El Dorado 5-Miler, a race that included 200 participants. The Grom Race for paddlers 13 and younger took place in the afternoon with South Tahoe SUP’s signature SUP Cross event held throughout the day.

On Sunday, the Emerald Bay Distance race went 14.3 miles to the jewel of Lake Tahoe and back. The two-day event concluded Sunday afternoon with the Team Relay race.

The youngest competitors at Race the Lake of the Sky were 5-year-olds Alexander Alvarez and Brennan Pappakostas, who each competed in the Grom Race. Robert Christensen was the event’s most-seasoned competitor — the 68-year-old rode an outrigger canoe to an 83rd-place finish in the El Dorado 5-Miler.

Complete race results are available at http://www.racethelakeofthesky.com.
