Rahlves: California Surf Child to Skiing Rock Star

Daron Rahlves just became a ski racing rock star.

No American man had won any back-to-back World Cup events since Bill Johnson in 1984.

Add in the fact that no American man has claimed any victory since 1995 (Kyle Rasmussen, Kvitfjell, Norway), and Rahlves’ status is secure.

Ford Downhill Series participant Kyle Rasmussen had a chance to speak about his former teammate over the weekend. Both Rasmussen and U.S. Ford Downhill teammate Tommy Moe, of Girdwood, Alaska, won on the same Kvitfjell DH course as Rahlves.

“I think it’s totally awesome that Daron broke out in Norway,” said Rasmussen, of Angels Camp, Calif. “And once you win one race, I know how it feels, you can go right on and win another one. Id like to say congratulations – I know he’ll have more success and he’ll probably win again.”

What is it about the speed track at Kvitfjell that has treated the American ski racers so well? Moe offered an explanation.

“It just doesn’t have a lot of flats and it suits our style,” Moe said. “It’s pretty much full pedal to the medal. Daron is a technical skier. He’s been showing he can win all season long. He just didn’t really put it together, and now he found it. Unreal … I’m so psyched for him. The kid is such a hard worker. I got all fired up – I got goosebumps when I heard that he’d won.”
