Ramos, Barhke make ‘A’ grade

Tribune staff report

With U.S. Ski Team selections for the Winter Olympics squad a little more than eight months away, two area freestyle skiers received word Friday that they’ll start the 2001-2002 season on the preferred team.

Travis Ramos, 22, of South Lake Tahoe and Shannon Bahrke, 21, of Tahoe City were appointed to the “A” team. Ramos scored his first World Cup victory last season was consistently among the top performers.

Three other Lake Tahoe area skiers were chosen to either the “B” or “C” teams.

South Lake Tahoe’s Chris Hernandez, 22, parlayed a late-season string of top-10 finishes to earn “B” team status, while South Shore 17-year-old Travis Cabral, the 1999 national champion, made the “C” team. Laurel Shanley, 18, of the North Shore, was appointed to the women’s “C” team.

Three-time Olympian Ann Battelle OF Steamboat Springs, Colo., returns for her 10th season with the Team after missing most of 2001 due to a shoulder injury.

Jonny Moseley of Tiburon, Calif., will aim to defend his ’98 Olympic gold, while veteran Donna Weinbrecht of Killington, Vt., the first-ever Olympic moguls champion, has her sights set on a return to the Games. Both were selected to the “B” team.

The specific 2002 U.S. Olympic Team will be named Jan. 22.
