Four Reno businessmen believe they have the ticket to return big-time boxing to the Reno-Tahoe area.

Reno Ring and Duva Boxing will present a July 10 card at Caesars Tahoe that will feature more than headliner Oscar Diaz. Boxing fans will have a chance to mingle with former lightweight champ Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, as well as actor Vinny Vella of “The Sopranos” and “Penthouse” cover girl Sunset Thomas.

“We come from entertainment and entrepreneurial backgrounds and we’re putting them to work in our boxing endeavors,” said Kent Wallace, who forms the Reno Ring with Jack Caramella, Frank Leonardi and Chuck Travella. “We expect the fights and the fanfare to be over the top.”

Diaz, a talented welterweight, has a 17-1 record.

Swim club tryouts June 7-9

The Tahoe Swim Club team has about 50 current members from ages 5 to 17 and is looking for 20 more members.

To try out, swimmers need to be able to make it across the 25-yard pool (perfect isn’t necessary). The team is year-round and all about learning proper swimming techniques and skills, camaraderie and competition. Practice sessions are on Mondays, Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays after school. Swim meets are usually only once a month.

The tryouts are scheduled for June 7-9 from 4 to 4:30 p.m. at the city of South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center Pool, 1180 Rufus Allen Boulevard. There is no cost for the three-day tryout, but attendance for all three days is required. The cost for a three-month trial period is $190, then monthly dues following. Bring swimsuit and towel. Come on out.

The Tahoe Swim Club is not just for good swimmers. It’s for all who want to learn to be good swimmers.
