Rhoden solidifies qualifying position

Tribune staff report

Five-time celebrity golf championship winner Rick Rhoden remained in solid position to move on to the finals of Champions Tour qualifying with an even-par 72 Wednesday in St. Augustine, Fla.

Rhoden, a former major league pitcher, is tied for sixth in a field of 80 players at Marsh Creek Country Club, one of five regionals going on this week.

Marsh Creek’s top 16 players – five more than last year — will advance to qualifying finals Nov. 19-22.

Rhoden trails leaders Des Smyth, Tommy Price and Ronnie Hopper by two shots. Smyth of Ireland led the 2002 British Open briefly in the third round before finishing six shots behind winner Ernie Els.

Former NFL quarterback Steve Bartkowski improved from 62nd to 46th place with a second-round 75.
