Riders pipe up at Sierra

Steve Yingling, Tribune Sports Editor

South Tahoe Snowboard Series regulars compete in their fair share of boardercross, giant slalom, slalom and slopestyle events, but it isn’t often that they venture into a superpipe.

Sierra-at-Tahoe made up for that shortcoming last Sunday when the resort exposed the area boarders to their first superpipe competition of the season.

As unfamiliar as the speed and G forces were, some of the series participants performed like they have been training in the superpipe all season.

Stacie Anderson of Tahoe Paradise scored the biggest score — 45.0 — among the younger boarders as she won the breaker girls 12-13 division. Other top debuts in the large pipe were by Carson City’s Mike Orlick, 49.9, youth men 14-15 winner; Frankie Jones of South Lake Tahoe, 43.5, junior men’s 16-17 winner; Waylon Broussard, Placerville, 51.0, open men’s winner; and Travis Chatwin, South Lake Tahoe, 50.75, open men’s runner-up.

Heavenly Snowboard Foundation coach Ed McClain said that some riders were a little tentative at first but adapted quickly.

“A lot of it’s mental because the size of the pipe is so intimidating,” McClain said. “The transition requires more patience and along with the bigger walls comes bigger speed, and that’s a little intimidating, too.”

The benefit of holding a series superpipe event will help the riders next month when the series competes in the national championships at Mammoth Mountain. Superpipe is on the list of events.

“We’ve even taken a field trip down to Mammoth because we know what we’ll see at nationals,” McClain said.

The weekend of competition also included a boardercross event on Saturday — also at Sierra-at-Tahoe.

Winners included Julia Mason, ruggie girls 7 and under; Natasha Sagucka, grommet girls 8 and 9; Jamie Anderson, menehune girls 10-11; Stacie Anderson, breaker girls 12-13; Joanie Anderson, youth women 14-15; Katie Sheehan, junior women 16-17; Tara Parina, women’s jam’s 18-22; Nancy Ng, master women 30-39; Donna Vano, legend women 40-49; Laurie Scribe, open women; Sammy Mason, ruggie boys 7 and under; Harrison Kramer, grommet boys 8 and 9; Roger Carver, menehune boys 10-11; Garrett Gibb, breaker boys 12-13; Greg Dupree, youth women 14-15; Jones, junior men 16-17; Justin Alcantara, men’s jam’s 18-22; Timothy Pincott, senior men 23-29; Adam Neil, master men 30-39; Gilbert Kramer, legend men 40-49; Herbert Schulze, kahuna men 50-59; Trevor Snowden, adaptive; and Brady Gunsch, open men.

The series takes a two-week break before resuming with a night slalom race Feb. 22 at Heavenly Ski Resort and a slopestyle Feb. 23 at Sierra-at-Tahoe.
