Rim Trail group offering snowshoeing program

Staff reports

Join the Tahoe Rim Trail Association for its third Winter Trails snowshoe program. The snowshoe events enable the entire family to try snow sports and discover the fitness and social benefits of snowshoeing.

Each of the free snowshoe programs are accompanied by TRTA staff guides and TRTA volunteer guides. The 2008 Winter Trails snowshoe program kicks off Jan. 12 with National Winter Trails Day at Tahoe Meadows. TRTA will partner with Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol for a fun-filled day of snowshoeing and an educational demonstration on winter safety.

To find out more about the Winter Trails program, go to the calendar of events at http://www.tahoerimtrail.org or contact Alexis at (775) 298-0231 or alexiso@tahoerimtrail.org.

Resorts opening more terrain

With Kirkwood reporting about 4 feet of new snow this week, the resort is expecting to open 100 percent of its mountain by Saturday. Sierra-at-Tahoe and Heavenly also received hefty amounts of snow and plan to open additional terrain.

Sierra will have three terrain parks open this weekend as well as new trails near Grandview lift and all the trails in the West Bowl region. The backside, though, will not open this weekend. A phone call to Heavenly regarding the resort’s plan to open additional terrain was unreturned.

Steep premiere in village

Some of the more popular names in big mountain skiing will be on display on Friday when the premiere of “Steep” is held at the Heavenly Village Cinemas. South Lake Tahoe native Glen Plake will be featured in the film. Contact the theater for show times.
