Roberts and Wahl-Usher to learn state tournament fates
Although three South Tahoe High tennis stars won’t find out their opponents for the first round of the 4A state tournament until today, there are only a finite amount of possibilities.
The doubles team of Chela Wahl and Kenzie Usher is a No. 3 seed from the Northern region and will play a top-seeded team from one of the state’s three regions. The STHS seniors will face either Northern region champions Lindy Deller and Adrian Potter of Galena, Sunset region champs Iesha James and Natasha James of Clark or Sunrise region champions Kirsten Santero and Nicole Santero of Silverado.
Wahl and Usher lost to Deller and Potter in the Northern regional semifinals.
STHS singles player Jimmy Roberts, meanwhile, is the Northern region’s No. 2 seed and could play either a No. 1 seed or a No. 2 seed.
If Roberts gets drawn with a No. 1 seed, he would either face Sunset region champion Stan Breland of Canyon Springs, Sunrise region champ Brandon Park of Palo Verde or Northern region champion Jeff Mullen of Reno.
Roberts has been eliminated from the state tournament the past two years by Breland – last year in the semifinals and two years ago in the quarterfinals. Roberts also has a history with Mullen, who defeated the STHS senior in last Saturday’s regional championship. He defeated Mullen in the regular season and in last year’s regional title match.
If Roberts gets drawn against another No. 2 seed, he will play either Sunset region No. 2 seed Jimmy Lovett of the Meadows or Sunrise region No. 2 seed Brian Kenyon of Coronado.
The state tournament draw will be posted today on http://www.niaa.com. The first round of the singles and doubles tournament begins on Friday at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas.
