Runners qualify for nationals

Steve Yingling

Lake Tahoe Track Club Junior Olympic Team’s Amber Ramos and Ben Johnson qualified for nationals with top-20 performances at the Region 14 Cross Country Championships Sunday in Pleasanton, Calif.

Ramos ran a personal-best 12 minutes, 7 seconds to finish ninth in the 1.9-mile midget girls race.

“She ran very relaxed and qualified very easily,” said Lake Tahoe coach Anthony Davis. “It was good to see her back in form again after basically a three-week layoff after the middle school cross-country season and a knee injury.”

Jennifer Randazzo of Pleasanton took advantage of the familiar surroundings to win the midget girls title in 11:14.

Johnson contended for the youth boys title, placing 11th in 14:42. The 2.5-mile race was won by Shawn Lyle of Eureka in 13:37.

“Ben’s goal was he just wanted to qualify for nationals because he’s been playing basketball for Kingsbury Middle School, which is new to him,” Davis said.

Only runners finishing 20th or better qualified for the Dec. 13 national championships at Blue Lake Park in Portland, Ore.

Lake Tahoe’s Dorothy Seidel of Carson City barely missed qualifying, placing 26th in the youth girls class. Her time was 20:19 for the 2.5-mile race. Sara Bei of Santa Rosa, Calif., posted a winning time of 14:55.

Davis is pleased with the progress his club runners made during their short season.

“I think all of the kids did an outstanding job. Hopefully we can continue to improve on it, and get more kids to come out and join in the fun,” Davis said.
