Ruvalcaba fight scratched

Staff reports

Boxer Simon Ruvalcaba went from a last-minute fillin in his last bout to a last-minute scratch on Friday night.

Ruvalcaba, a STHS alum living in Carson City, was supposed to fight Juan Montes at the Gold Coast in Las Vegas. Matchmakers, however, tried to switch Ruvalcaba’s opponent, and when the 26-year-old wouldn’t oblige, the welterweight was scratched from the show.

“I’m taking some time off before getting back in the gym as it was pretty depressing to go through the work for no bout,” Ruvalcaba said.

Ruvalcaba has been training with Kelly Davis, the brother and trainer of IBF cruiserweight champion Kelvin Davis.

“I was in Reno six days a week training as hard as ever. I was already into sparring and fine-tuning what I could for this fight,” he said. “I was anticipating I would show improvement, with a long ways to go before any kind of perfection, with me and Kelly working only a couple of weeks together.”

Ruvalcaba is hoping to fight at least once before the end of the year.
