Seniors respond in 36-hole South Tahoe golf tryouts

Unless they had a golf pass in the Sacramento area, players trying out for the South Tahoe High golf team this week had little or no preparation time.

As usual, coach Mike Patterson determined members of his team by who scored the best over 36 holes of play.

“I don’t think there is a fairer way to do that,” said the 14-year Viking coach. “Let the scores determine who makes the team. From my end, there are no judgment calls. They scored or they didn’t.”

Senior Kyle Mazzoni emerged from the pressure-packed tryouts as the Vikings’ No. 1 player.

“Going into today, he was nine or 10 strokes ahead of the kids behind him,” Patterson said. “He certainly earned the right as our No. 1 (today).”

The Vikings open their season today at the annual Icebreaker event at Genoa Lakes resort course.

Patterson kept 12 of the 17 players who participated in the qualifying at the two Genoa Lakes courses near the town of Genoa. Half of the players will make up the varsity, and the other half will play on the “B” team. Players have a chance to move from one team to the other during the weekly nine-hole qualifying matches held between matches.

“I put them on a ladder from one to 12 and when we play, kids have a chance to move up or down the ladder two spots. This rewards consistent play,” Patterson said.

Joining Mazzoni on the Vikings’ “A” team are seniors Eric Cianci, Kyle Garrett, Chad Cooney and Trevor Borek; and junior Kaz Kosciolek. Cianci, Garrett and Mazzoni played in all of the Vikings’ Sierra Cup matches last year and were Northern 4A third-team all-league selections, so Patterson should have a contingent capable of upholding South Tahoe’s penchant for making the postseason. Cianci showed his potential in the regional tournament last year, firing a 76, the fifth-best score in the opening round.

“We’ve made the regional tournament seven out of the last eight years, and that certainly is one of our goals,” Patterson said. “And we have three or four individuals who have a shot of making the state tournament.”

Junior Paul Passaretti and sophomore Chris Whatford also made the team and should be in contention to play for the “A” team.
