Skateboard competition returns to South Tahoe

Skateboard enthusiasts can celebrate Cinco de Mayo in style at the El Bowlrrito competition at Skatehouse Skateboard Park on Saturday.

The idea to bring the inaugural El Bowlrrito to Tahoe comes after the success of the reTerror in Tahoe from 2012. This pro/am bowl competition is a jam format and open to all ages and abilities separated into divisions. Registration and practice start at 8 a.m., with a $20 entry fee for all competitors, and the first heat starts at 11 a.m.

The 12 and under open division is scheduled to compete first, followed by 13-18 open, women’s open 19 and up, men’s open 19 and up, masters 40 and up, women’s pro, men’s pro and ending with best trick open to all ages.

Each heat will consist of about six riders competing to win money and prizes. Each rider gets an intro run followed by a 15 minute jam with all six skaters riding together. The best two from each heat compete for a winner in a final jam.

Cince de Mayo themed food will be available, live bands will be playing during warm-up rounds and in between heats and kids 12 and younger can participate in a free “pinata beat down”. Bands include South Shore Riot, Screaming Meg, End of the Line and others.

Diamond Grind Coping is installing a custom Diamond Grind Coping at the top of the lip in the bowl.

The competition is hosted by Pineapple Edger aka Edgar Rivera of Tom Sims Retro World Snowboarding Championships and SK8ing for Autism.

The Skatehouse , 867 Eloise St. unit C, is hosting an after party stating at 8 p.m. at the Classic Cue and will feature four live bands.
