Smaine, Suglian just miss top 10s at JOs

South Lake Tahoe’s Justin Smaine and Michael Suglian produced the top results from the area at the March 21-24 J3 Western Region Junior Olympics in Bogus Basin, Idaho.

Smaine, who skis out for the Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation, just missed the top 10 in the slalom, finishing 11th. He was .48 of a second out of 10th place.

Suglian, a Squaw Valley racer, finished 12th in the super-G with a time of 1:16.28. He had the third-best result among Far West skiers and missed a top 10 by .30.

In their other two disciplines at the JOs, Suglian was 18th in slalom and 25th in GS, while Smaine placed 35th in GS and 85th in super-G.

Other Far West racers from South Shore resorts competing at the JOs were Troy Cohee of Kirkwood and Grant Denny of Heavenly. Denny placed 25th in super-G, 59th in GS and 72nd in slalom. Cohee was 42nd in GS, 43rd in super-G and 66th in slalom.
