Smith 26th in Foot Locker West regional
South Tahoe High’s Kelsey Smith and Galena’s Bryan Tibaduiza proved that they are among the top runners in the Western region.
Smith, a Viking sophomore, placed 26th in the Foot Locker West Region Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.
Smith was timed in 18 minutes, 15 seconds for the girls’ seeded 5K race won by Jordan Hasay. Hasay, a three-time Western Regional winner and the 2005 national champion from Arroyo Grande, Calif., finished in 17:17.
Tibaduiza, a Galena junior, placed 22nd in the boys’ race with a time of 15:36. German Fernandez of Riverbank, Calif., used a 4:43 pace per mile to win in 14:53.
Nathan Chellman of Sage Ridge in Reno finished 78th in 16:12.
The region includes runners from Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
Neither Tibaduiza or Smith qualified for Saturday’s national championship races. The top 10 boys and girls from the West regional advanced to nationals to compete against runners from the Midwest, South and Northeast regional meets. The 29th annual Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National Finals are Saturday at Balboa Park in San Diego.
