Soup for everybody

How about Soup for Easter?

Bijou Disc Golf Course’s monthly tournament begins Sunday at 10 a.m. Continuing a six-year tradition, the winner will get a can of chicken noodle soup.

The cost is $5 per Soup Series event.

Money raised from the seven Soup tournaments this summer will go toward a new basket at Zephyr Cove Park course, which currently has 10 baskets and eight posts which are used for targets.

Earlier this year, Basket No. 6 was stolen from Zephyr Cove.

“It’s very unfortunate that people can’t respect the park’s property,” said second-year Soup commissioner Dan Thrift. “The first $350 we raise from the Soup Series this summer will be used to replace that basket.”

The remainder of the money will be given to the top seven points winners and for the purchase of trophies. Last year’s champion, Joe Meyer, won $50.

Another coveted prize is the Scott Prescott Award, given to the eight-place finisher, who is usually Prescott.

A disc will be awarded in a closest-to-the-pin contest at Basket No. 1.

Because of the mild winter, Sunday’s tournament will be the earliest start for the Soup Series.

The baskets will be moved into many of the longest positions, Thrift said.

Funds from the Soup Series have helped purchase three baskets, some t-signs and double chains for the front nine at Bijou Community Park.

Any business or individual who would like to donate funds or purchase a basket can call John Lufrano at the Douglas County Parks Department (775) 588-0271 or Thrift (530) 544-8078.
