The South Lake Tahoe 11-12 All-Stars are ready for the heat in Reno. They’ll bring some heat of their own, too.

South Lake Tahoe will open the district tournament against Sparks Centennial at 5:30 p.m. today at Terrace Complex in Reno. Temperatures are again expected to reach the upper 90s in Reno, putting the local boys in a climate that is about 10-15 degrees warmer than they normally experience at the lake.

“That doesn’t matter to us. As far as we’re concerned, we’re gonna hit the ball and play ball,” said South Lake Tahoe coach Kevin Higgins.

South Lake Tahoe will bring its own heat in the form of talented pitchers Tyler Sharp, Leo Trebotich, Zack Petray and Cody Higgins.

“We have some great pitching. I really like our pitching lineup,” coach Higgins said.

The team has been preparing for the tournament by practicing five or six days per week, although it missed three days because of the Angora fire.

“The kids have been working hard,” Higgins said. “They are all excited. I can see it in their faces; everyone is confident and excited to get down there and go for it.”

Also in South Lake Tahoe’s pool are Carson American, Reno Continental, Carson Valley, Washoe and Reno American East. The top four teams in each pool advance to the quarterfinals.
